When you share your location, a red pin is placed on your approximate coordinates (ensuring your exact location remains private) and is automatically integrated into the global thread. For those who want to support the project, a $1 contribution allows you to drop a gold marker and leave a custom message for other users to discover.
While an impressive feat of digital connection, PinTheEarth feels slightly less dynamic than Neal Agarwal’s Internet Roadtrip. In Agarwal’s collaborative Street View drive, a virtual car is steered across the world by collective user votes. The Internet Roadtrip has so far traveled over 33,000 miles from Canada to New York. However, even if it isn't quite as adrenaline-fueled, PinTheEarth is still a compelling digital art experiment that visually connects people across the globe in a shared, collaborative journey.
