Automatic Small Multiples

US Football Stadium

I’ve been having a lot of fun playing with the XofY OSM Geometry Viewer. The viewer is a specialized web tool created by Matt Whilden that visualizes the geometries of OpenStreetMap (OSM) features in a “small multiples” layout. It allows you to compare the shapes and outlines of specific objects without the distraction of a background map.

For example, above you can see the outlines of the largest US football stadiums, and below are some UK soccer stadiums (not the largest).

How to use it:

When you visit the site, you can choose from several example queries (like “Waterslides of Arizona”) or input your own custom query. The tool fetches data via the Overpass API and renders the results as a series of standalone geometric shapes.

For those with their own datasets, you can also import custom GeoJSON data directly. For example I used this Overpass Turbo query to download the GeoJSON of the tracks of a number of Formula 1 race circuits. I then imported this GeoJSON file into the XofY OSM Geometry Viewer to create a small multiple visualization of Formula 1 circuits.
